Delete WhatsApp Photos from Gallery and Stop Saving

Updated · 7 min read

In short

To delete WhatsApp photos from the gallery, start in WhatsApp: Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage removes media in bulk, though WhatsApp warns that copies may stay on the phone. Turn off Media visibility under Settings › Chats to stop new photos, sort the ones already in the gallery, then empty the phone's trash.

In this guide

If you want to delete WhatsApp photos from your gallery, the work comes in three parts: stop WhatsApp from saving more, clear what it stored, and sort the thousands of images already mixed in with your own photos. The order matters, because a gallery you clean today fills up again by next week if WhatsApp keeps saving everything.

The WhatsApp steps below come from WhatsApp’s Help Center for Android, read on 15 October 2026, and menu names can change with app updates.

WhatsApp saves the photos you receive on your phone, and your gallery shows them. WhatsApp’s help says it “automatically saves audio, video and photos sent to your phone”, and that the Media visibility option is turned on by default (WhatsApp help).

The files go to a folder called WhatsApp/Media, in the phone’s internal storage, or on the SD card if the phone has no internal storage (WhatsApp help), and the help names the photo folder WhatsApp Images. WhatsApp’s page on auto-download puts it plainly: “Automatically downloaded media will show up in your gallery” (WhatsApp help).

So every meme and forwarded picture from a busy group becomes a photo file next to your own, using storage like them.

A WhatsApp photo shows up in two places: in the chat, and in your gallery. Deleting it in one place does not always remove it from the other. When you delete an item in WhatsApp, “it’ll be deleted from your WhatsApp media. Deleted items might still be saved on your device. If you have multiple copies of an item, you’ll also need to delete all copies to free up space” (WhatsApp help). WhatsApp does not say exactly when a copy stays behind, so check your gallery after a clean-up in WhatsApp.

WhatsApp’s help pages don’t say what the chat shows after you delete a photo in the gallery.

Turn off Media visibility and WhatsApp stops adding new photos to your gallery. Do this first, so the gallery doesn’t refill while you clean up.

For all chats (WhatsApp help):

  1. Tap the three-dot menu, then Settings › Chats.
  2. Turn off Media visibility.

WhatsApp’s help says this stops it “from automatically saving media to your device’s local storage”, without changing the auto-download choices you made for specific chats. It says nothing about photos already saved, so expect those to stay in your gallery until you delete them.

For one chat or group only. If you want to keep family photos coming but not the meme group’s, open the chat, tap the contact or group name, then Media visibility › No › OK.

Limit what downloads on its own. Under Settings › Storage and data, the Media auto-download section has three entries: When using mobile data, When connected on Wi-Fi and When roaming. In each one, untick Photos (or any other media type) and tap OK (WhatsApp help). Photos then download only when you tap them.

Hide rather than stop. WhatsApp’s help also describes a .nomedia file, created in the WhatsApp Images folder with a file explorer app, that hides all your WhatsApp photos from the gallery. Hiding is not deleting: the photos stay on the phone and keep taking space.

Delete WhatsApp media in bulk with Manage storage

WhatsApp’s storage screen shows where the space goes (WhatsApp help). Open WhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu, then Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage. The space WhatsApp takes on your phone shows at the top, and WhatsApp suggests starting with large files and files forwarded many times, or with one chat. You can also open a chat, tap its name, then Manage storage: it shows how much space that chat’s media takes, sorted from largest to smallest.

To delete, WhatsApp’s help gives its steps from Settings › Chats › Chat backup › Manage your storage › Review and delete media:

  1. Select a chat or channel. The sort icon orders the media by Newest, Oldest or Largest, and Larger than 5 MB finds the large files.
  2. Tap and hold an item to select it, then tap more items, or Select all.
  3. Tap the delete icon. Select Delete any copies to remove the other copies too.
  4. Tap Delete.

WhatsApp warns that this is permanent (you can’t download the item again from the chat) and only for you: others in the chat still see it. The help adds that a deletion leaves your phone right away but stays in your WhatsApp backup until your next backup.

Clear a whole chat’s media. Open the chat, tap the three-dot menu, then More › Clear chat, select Clear media files, tick Photos (and any other types you want gone), then tap Clear media. The chat itself stays, and so does your place in the group.

Delete one photo from the chat and the gallery together. Tap the search field at the top of your chats list, tap Photos, open the photo, open its options, then Delete. Tick “Also delete media received in this chat from the device gallery”, then tap Delete for me. This is the one flow where the help says the gallery copy goes too.

What you do What happens, according to the official help
Turn off Media visibility WhatsApp stops saving new media automatically
Untick Photos in Media auto-download Photos download only when you tap them
A .nomedia file in WhatsApp Images WhatsApp photos are hidden from the gallery, not deleted
Delete in Review and delete media Permanent, for you only; removed from your WhatsApp media, but copies might still be saved on the phone
Delete through search, with the gallery box ticked Removed from the chat and from the device gallery
Clear chat › Clear media files The chat’s media is cleared; the chat and the group stay

Sort the thousands of WhatsApp photos already there

What is left is the backlog: years of pictures saved before you changed the setting. Manage storage shows files, while the gallery shows each WhatsApp image next to your own photos from the same days, which makes the decision easier. Your gallery app may show WhatsApp Images as an album for deleting a batch of obvious memes, but across thousands of photos, selecting gets slow and the doubtful ones stay mixed in.

In Oust, you swipe left to delete, right to keep, and down for Later, the pile for the photos you can’t decide on yet. Undo reverses the last swipe. Oust works on your whole gallery rather than one album, so the WhatsApp images get sorted along with everything else in a single pass. Choose Photos only to leave videos for another day, and Random or Timeline order.

Sort WhatsApp photos one swipe at a time.

Oust shows your gallery one photo at a time: left to delete, right to keep, down for later. No account, and your photos stay on your phone.

No account · everything stays on your phone · on Android, coming soon to iPhone

Nothing is deleted while you swipe. The photos you swipe left wait in Photos to delete, which you open with View Trash, and you untick anything you swiped by mistake before you confirm. The method is in the guide to swiping through an Android gallery.

Your photos never leave your phone: Oust has no server and no account. Oust is on Android today, from Google Play, free with ads, and even the free version sorts hundreds of photos a day; a one-time lifetime purchase removes the daily limit and the ads. iPhone is coming soon.

Empty the trash to get the space back

On Android 11 and later, a deleted photo usually waits in a trash, still taking space. Android’s developer documentation says trashed media typically expires after 30 days and is then deleted automatically (Android developers).

When you confirm in Oust, Android 11 and later ask you too and move the photos to that trash; on Android 10 and earlier, Oust warns you that deletion is permanent. To get the space back now, empty the trash in your gallery app or Files app. Its name and place differ by brand: see the guide to deleted photos that still take up space, or the steps for Samsung and Xiaomi.

If you use Google Photos. Google’s help says deleted items stay in its trash for 30 days. It also says that deleting a photo in the Google Photos app deletes it from your device too, and, if it was backed up, from every device with backup turned on (Google help). To empty it: Collections › Trash › More › Empty Trash › Delete permanently.

Google Photos backs up the device folders you choose under Back up device folders (Google help). Check whether WhatsApp Images is one of them before you clean up there.

Emptying a trash cannot be undone, so scroll through it once first.

Not sure about a photo? Swipe it down. It waits in the Later pile, and you decide another day. No account needed.

What this guide doesn’t cover

This guide is about photos in the gallery on Android. It doesn’t cover WhatsApp chat backups or their cloud storage, voice messages, documents, or WhatsApp on iPhone, whose settings are different. If you’re cleaning up because a new phone is coming, the checklist before a new phone puts the backup, the sorting and the transfer in order.

Where do your photos go while you sort?

With Oust, nowhere: Oust has no server, and the sorting happens on your phone. The ads in the free version come from AdMob; your photos don't. How to check for yourself

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop WhatsApp saving photos to my gallery?

On Android, tap the three-dot menu, then Settings › Chats, and turn off Media visibility. WhatsApp's help says this stops it from automatically saving media to your phone's storage. For a single chat or group, open it, tap its name, then Media visibility › No › OK.

Does deleting a WhatsApp photo in the chat remove it from my gallery?

Not always. WhatsApp's help says a deleted item is removed from your WhatsApp media but might still be saved on your device, and that every copy has to go to free the space. When you delete a photo through WhatsApp's search, you can tick Also delete media received in this chat from the device gallery.

Where is the WhatsApp Images folder on Android?

WhatsApp's help says media is saved automatically in the WhatsApp/Media folder, in the phone's internal storage, or on the SD card if the phone has no internal storage. Its help names the photo folder WhatsApp Images. Your gallery app may show it as an album, where you can select photos and delete them; empty the phone's trash afterwards to get the space back.

Does turning off Media visibility delete the photos already saved?

WhatsApp's help describes Media visibility as stopping the automatic saving of new media and says nothing about removing photos already saved, so expect those to stay in your gallery. Delete them in WhatsApp's Manage storage or sort them in the gallery, then empty the trash.

Can I hide WhatsApp photos from the gallery without deleting them?

Yes. WhatsApp's help suggests creating a file named .nomedia, with the period, in the WhatsApp Images folder using a file explorer app. It hides all your WhatsApp photos from the gallery but does not delete them, so they still take up space. Delete the .nomedia file to show them again.
